UNGI1101 - Religions of the World

Overview

This course provides a comparative and interdisciplinary introduction to major world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Chinese religious traditions, Indigenous and local belief systems, and contemporary forms of spirituality. Students examine key beliefs, sacred texts, rituals, historical development, ethical traditions, and the influence of religion on identity, culture, organizations, and society.

The course also introduces foundational questions in the philosophy of religion, including concepts of divinity, knowledge, morality, suffering, human purpose, and life after death. Students compare how religious and non-religious worldviews respond to these questions while learning to distinguish description, interpretation, and evaluation.

Contemporary themes include pluralism, interfaith dialogue, prejudice and stereotyping, religion in public life, secularism, globalization, digital media, conflict, and peacebuilding. Through guided discussion and case analysis, students develop respectful communication, ethical reasoning, and the ability to engage constructively with religious diversity
