IFFS1201 - Database Systems

Overview

This course introduces fundamental concepts of database systems, database modeling, relational databases, SQL programming, transaction management, database security, and advanced database technologies. Students will develop a semester long database project involving analysis, design, implementation, and database management. The curriculum covers file systems vs DBMS, database normalization (BCNF, 4NF, 5NF), ER and EER modeling (entities, attributes, relationships, cardinality, specialization/generalization), three level database architecture, relational model, data warehousing and data mining basics, transaction management (ACID, concurrency control, recovery), SQL DDL (CREATE, ALTER, DROP), SQL DML (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), constraints, multi table queries (JOINs), aggregate functions, views, indexes, stored procedures, database security (user management, privileges, backup), and modern topics (NoSQL, ORM, distributed databases). Through hands on labs and a project based approach, students will gain practical skills to design, implement, and manage database systems.
